This is my entry into the "Bring out the Trash" contest, hosted/sponsored by painters [link]
As the theme of the contest is political, I had to relate the painting(s) to the issue of "Renewable/Reusable/Recyclable." The way I approached this was to juxtapose the two different canvases, where the green one symbolizes the natural world, and the black one symbolizes the city, or urban world. The clashing between these two worlds, more specifically the domination of the urban world, is a critical issue in the whole environment/trash-related political discussion. People congregate in cities, building, polluting, and in effect covering up the natural world with man-made structures and pollutants. I represented this in the painting by including traces of the yellow/blue/green colours, which represent the natural world, in the black canvas; it's hard to recognize the natural beauty behind the buildings, smog, etc. of the cities. The intricate and complex texturing of the black canvas contrasts to the simple, flowing texture of the green one; this symbolizes the added density of people in cities, the increased number of lives that must run parallel yet often separately from each other.
diptych. acrylics on canvas, each approx. 24x15 cm completed 17.04.2008
Alternate version of this, with framing & a title added in Gimp (this was not allowed for the contest): [link]
I personally think that these 2 canvases should be enjoyed separately rather than as a diptych, but thought it was fitting for this theme. *edit: i disagree!
I rather like the juxtaposition here - each plays off the contrast of the other. The title makes me think of Iris Murdoch's 'The Red and the Green' - a political subject of a somewhat different nature
That's a very good entry for the Renewable contest.
Somehow I never thought about the possibility of an abstract painting for this contest, but I think yours is very fitting. Its simplicity makes it attractive; I like the fact that the textures and colours of the different canvases represent the different environments.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More

Actually, I thought about entering as well, but I just didn't have the right idea for a picture.
